We are still in the process of doing some painting and things in our basement, but I couldn't wait to share what we've done so far. It's not much, but it took me forever.
Before:
After:
I used these Martha Stewart stencils and they were fairly easy to use, but it was kind of a pain to twist myself enough to get down there to actually paint.
Here are a few close ups:
I'm thinking about painting the built ins that turquoise color, but I'm not sure how it will look. Expect an update!

Friday Fives
Here's five random things on this Friday.....
-I have to work today. Boo. My company gives us President's day instead of Good Friday. Yay America.
-KB's grow light operation has been working well....a little too well. We transplanted the seedlings into bigger pots yesterday because they were starting to die. Now my house looks like something off of Drugs Inc. Lots of pots. Lots of lights. Lots of water. Our neighbor actually asked us the other day what he should tell the cops we are growing when they show up.
-I got bitten by a tick 2 weeks ago. It still itches like crazy and has this really nasty scab on it. Ticks are seriously so gross and there is snow on the ground. What was a tick doing out at that time (I sound like its mom)? Before you go crazy and think that I have some nasty tick borne illness, I don't. We have extensive background in that (KB is a tick magnet) and I don't have any of the symptoms. It's time to break out the DEET I guess.
-I'm still going back and forth on paint colors for our house. At first I wanted something dark and woodsy, but after thinking about it I think that would look kinda weird on our house. I think I've settled on a sage green color for most of it, a cream trim, and dark red accents. Now I just need to convince KB to pay someone to do it and not try it himself.
- Everyone should vote for Cheerwine in Garden and Guns bracket of the best southern foods. North Carolina come on and raise up.

Randoms...
- I have been listening to this remix during my workouts every morning this week. I can't get it out of my head.
- We're in the process of getting our kitchen redone (very early stages) and I have to pick out the granite for the counter tops, the wood floor and the tile, tile for the back splash and the new appliances before they get started. So many decisions.
We are keeping our oak cabinets since they aren't that old and are still in good shape. I'm thinking Uba Tuba granite (black with some gold flecks) and slate tile for the backsplash, but in a subway tile type shape. Ugh - decisions are so hard. I'm also going with black appliances since I'm not a huge fan of stainless steel.
For the floor, we're probably just going to do some sort of distressed oak or maple floor.
- In keeping with the updated kitchen look - I started a thread on Houzz to get ideas. People are so weird! The thread turned into some lady talking about her Maine Coon cat and she got offended when I said "Oh aren't those the ones that are huge?". Apparently hers is "just a petite little girl and NOT huge". Come one people. I don't need cat feedback. Just tell me what color my drawer pulls should be.
- I'm so over the snow. It snowed here yesterday and it was so cold that even though the sun shone all day it still didn't melt. It's still there. Gross. Where is spring?
- We're getting ready to book our fall trip with my in-laws. We're either staying here...
Or here....
I'm voting for the first one, but I have a feeling Mama Brown will have the final word. We're hoping to maybe go down into Guatemeala or Belize for a little bit while we are there, that of course if KB doesn't get sick the whole time like he did last time. Montezuma meant business.

Thoughts on a Thursday
I haven't blurted out random thoughts in a while, so here goes...
-It's my first week of completely working at home (I used to be able to every now and then at my old job) and I'm amazed at the amount of work I get done (both personal and professional) when I'm all by myself. This week alone I've done all of my regular work, had 3 contractors out to look at our kitchen, deep cleaned a different room every day, kept up with laundry, and had dinner done by the time KB got home. It's been pretty glorious. I'm sure once I get up to speed with actual work though lots of the personal stuff will have to go away.
-KB has decided that he wants to go to law school (why I have no idea). This would involve us moving at least 3 hours away from where we are now. I'm not sold on the idea.....and he knows it. I'm hoping that it will just go away. He says he's tired of his job and he's bored with what he's doing. I'm hoping he gets a new job soon and the law school idea dies a quick death.
-I"m in the process of decorating my office/closet room (pictures to come). KB and his grandpa built me this huge corner desk. We decided to stain it in the basement and then move it upstairs to my office. Needless to say this desk weighs a million pounds and I was pretty sure I was going to die last night moving it. We also had a slight issue fitting it through the door, but made it (after scratching the door and walls which will now have to be repainted).
-I got to spend some quality time with some lovely lady hens yesterday. A friend of ours is going out of town for a few weeks and just moved close to us, so we're watching her chickens for her. I get to keep all of the eggs and hopefully it will be good practice for when we get our own chickens (hopefully this spring). We've got plans to build a log cabin coop like this one from Backyard Chickens that will use up a bunch of tress that KB has cut down.

Pretty Pretty
When I got home from NY I found this little lovely waiting on me..
I'm trying to get into orchids, so KB got me one for a little present while I was gone. I have another one that finished blooming, I repotted it and it hasn't flowered again (apparently it takes them a really long time to reflower). It's not looking too hot these days, so I'm not really sure what's going on.
Any orchid growing tips? I see them in design magazines all the time, so somebody out there has to know what's going on.

Currently...
Listening....Slip Sliding Away - not exactly pump up music for a Thursday
Eating....nothing, but I just finished up a strawberry greek yogurt
Drinking...nothing, but I just finished up some lemon verbena green tea
Reading...The Salt God's Daughter by Ilie Ruby. I haven't really started it yet, but it looks good.
Wearing...black turtleneck and leggings, cowboy boots and a lilly shift dress (it was a gift before you get to haughty about it I'm not normally a huge fan of printed pants and stuff)
Feeling...excited! I got some more details about my new job and I'm getting stuff set up for my home office.
Weather...cold and windy. There's supposed to be lots of ice tonight. A day at home tomorrow would be wonderful weather gods.
Needing...some caffeine. I'm sleepy.
Wanting...the week to hurry up. I am done with work on Monday and am getting a facial on Wednesday.
Thinking...that I'd like to make a fun lampshade out of paint chips or wax paper or something.
Enjoying...not really having anything to do at work. Short timing is awesome!

Confessions
-I haven't combed my hair all week. It's been really static-y and every time I brush it the static just gets even worse. Even Static Guard doesn't help. I've been wearing it up for most of the week, but still, I'm scared to finally brush it.
-I think I need an intervention with Craigslist. I've been purchasing a ton of random things off of there. In the past few weeks alone I've purchased or tried to purchase the following: 2 Queen Anne chairs, the Morticia Addams chair I posted about earlier, a rain barrel and 3 chickens. There's just so much good stuff for cheap. The rain barrel was actually free!
-I really thought Beyonce sang the national anthem. It seemed so real. The ear piece getting ripped out. The hand motions. What's going on Beyonce????
She still looked amazing though.
-I've been working out in the mornings and in the evenings, but not losing any weight because I've been eating like a crazy woman. Yesterday when I came home KB wasn't there and I ate some leftover fried chicken, macaroni and cheese and a biscuit.....then ate again when KB got home. I'm ravenously hungry all the time now, but I'm sure eating fried chicken hand over fist isn't really helping me.
-My biggest confession of all is that I've been keeping a secret from you guys. I got a new job! Starting week after next I'll be working from home for a new company, but will still be doing basically what my job is now. I'm excited to be at home with the puppies during the day now. Maybe they'll actually get this whole potty training thing down pat....I'm looking at you Pancho.
Now go link up with Mrs. Bear and confess away!

Hello my pretty....
I'll be getting this little pretty today...
I'm not sure how I'm going to redo it. Maybe something like this...
Or leave it natural like this...
Whatever I do with it, KB is convinced that this is what it'll look like...
Maybe that can be our Christmas card next year.

It's Okay Thursday
It's okay to......
- fall asleep on the count at 8:30 and completely miss all of your TV shows. That's what the DVR is for.
-get really excited about paint colors, but put off actually painting for a few weeks (it will get done this weekend though).
-eat a bunch of your birthday cake the day after your birthday. KB made it so I had to eat it.
-go to work hungover the day after your birthday. 26 is not that far from 21, right?
-listen to the same song over and over again. I'm looking at you Justin Bieber.
-wear the same pair of leggings for 2 days in a row (including sleeping in them).
-try to make black bean burgers and not really read the recipe. They failed miserably.
-not read all the info on the Pottery Barn website. I have monogrammed pillow cases coming out the ass. Who knew there would be 2 in a package? Ummmm pretty much everyone.....but me.

Randoms
I've been doing lots of fun projects around the house, but I'm too lazy right now to take pictures of them. Updates coming soon with lots of ginger jars (who knew Goodwill was the best source around for ginger jars), really masculine paint colors, a big framed deer painting and much more.
So what if I've watched Pretty Woman two nights in a row. KB has been gone dealing with dramaz and it's a cute movie. Also, hello Richard Gere? I know you are old, but you look real good in that suit and I love me some Wall Street types. Just about nothin' is better than powerful men that know how to handle money and wear suits almost everyday. Rawr.
Something in our master bathroom is leaking into our laundry room ceiling. There is a huge wet spot and we're probably going to have to rip out some drywall once we see what's leaking. Of course KB isn't here to deal with it. He just told me to shut the toilet off and he'd deal with it later. Awesome.
I've been ramping it up on the treadmill recently. I did an interval workout earlier today that was an hour and a half long. It really wasn't that bad. It looked terrible on paper and I thought I would give up pretty early on, but I stuck with it and it ended up going by really fast.
This show....let's discuss.
I love me some rednecks. I married into a family that has a bunch of them (luckily KB is only a part time redneck when convenient). I watched the first two episodes yesterday and they were hilarious. It's super staged and you can tell that most of these kids have got some money from somewhere because of the sheer amount of 4 Wheelers and pick ups, but I really like it. It's sort of like hanging out with my brother in law and his redneck friends over the summer - it's fun while you're doing it, but you're pretty glad you're not like that all the time. One of the funniest people on there is Shain. It goes without saying that my redneck brother in law shares the name, the weird stache, the accent where sometimes you need subtitles and the constant dip in the mouth.
We're I'm in the process of choosing paint colors for our house. Whyyyy is this so hardddd? I got some samples today and painted a little bit, but it's so hard to figure out how it's going to look on a major scale. I'm going for a dark green exterior, with an antique white trim and dark brown porch. That's way harder to find than it sounds.

It's beginning to look a lot like....
Spring in my house! I moved lots of my plants inside for the winter just to see how they would do and they are going like crazy.
There's lots of things growing around here...
I got this Christmas cactus from Lowe's last year sometime in January. They were selling them for just a dollar. I left it outside all spring and summer and it never really did much. As soon as I moved it inside though, it went crazy! It's growing like crazy and this past week has started blooming like crazy.
I've been wanting an orchid for a while, but could never find one that was affordable enough. These things are seriously expensive. I found this one in Aldi a few weeks ago for only $9. I couldn't pass it up. I love it! I've read a bunch about all their needs (they are as needy as a hormonal teenager), so hopefully I'll be able to keep it alive.
I love their blossoms! I must be doing something right though, because I have a little bloom that's popping up. Supposedly you can take that bloom when it gets a little bigger and transplant it into a whole new plant.
I'm also planning on trying to root a pineapple plant. My grandmother has a pineapple plant that she rooted from a pineapple top and it is huge! You can actually harvest your own pineapples from them after a few years. I read online that you need to let it root first in a shallow dish with water.
I also moved inside my African Violet. I made this fun little pot out of jute twine last night. It turned out pretty well and my African Violet fit right inside of it.
We're also working on doing some outside work on our new garden spot. I'm not sure what the people that lived here before us were doing but it involved lots of landscaping fabric and irrigation pipes (can you say sketchy). We're trying to rip up all of the landscaping fabric before tilling it up, but the stuff is everywhere!
What do you have growing???
