Home Ownership Smonership

We've begun the process of looking for a house. It's supposed to be fun and so far it hasn't really been.  Everybody says looking at houses is the most fun part, but so far it just leaves me feeling way more confused and unsure about what we're doing than before.

I'm definitely finding things I don't like (double wide trailers in the yard....I'm looking at you showing #1) and I'm definitely finding things that I do like (fun artsy stuff....I'm looking at you showing #3), but overall I don't really feel any clearer than I did when we first started looking.

I don't really understand what's going on with the whole mortgage process, but luckily KB is handling most of that and we seem to be squared away.  It's such a huge purchase and I'm so scared that I'm going to jump on the first house that I really like and then end up hating it once I live in it for a few months.

I'm having a hard time figuring out exactly what I want.   We've done the whole "wants vs. musts" thing and I have lots of wants but not a lot of musts.  That just makes it harder.  I just want something affordable, with a good bit of land, closer to work, a good amount of square footage, an area for the dogs, cool architectural things and a wood stove.  Is that too much to ask?  Probably.

  1. My hubby and I have been looking for a house too... isnt it the worst. Whoever thinks this is fun is absolutely insane. I feel like we are struggling. xo

  2. Buying a house was the single most stressful thing i have ever done in my life. Keep looking and don't settle is the only advice i have. It took me two years to find one, the first year i found what i wanted but someone beat me to it. Then i had to renew my lease and put it on hold. The next year i looked and looked and thankfully my current house was for sale which was the same (but in better condition) than the first one. I probably looked at 20 plus houses before i got a good idea of what i wanted. I'm sure my realtor hated me.

Do you have a time deadline?

  3. I thought house hunting was fun for about 2 second and then it was just stressful. It took us a long time and lots of failed bids. Every house we bid on we were madly in love with and thought it would be the end of the world if we didn't get it. But we didn't and we moved on and there was always another house. Just be patient and don't compromise what you want. Don't be afraid to walk away. Best of luck!

  4. As someone who has done this (way too) many times - when you find the right house, you'll just know. You'll love it pretty much immediately and it will just "feel" right. Then it will be totally stressful trying to actually get the house, and waiting, etc. But as Sara said, if it doesn't work, another always comes along. Looks like we'll be doing it again soon too :P
